Background
How does writing fluency affect grading for poll responses in Minerva?
How is a grade produced?
- Understanding of reading comprehension, knowledge, writing fluency, and random factors
- Attempt to focus on writing fluency
This project is focused on Minerva because students are writing under stress for poll responses and 80% of them are non-native speakers. As an educational institution, we want to help students achieve success for both native and non-native English speakers.
Although plenty of research has suggested that learning through a second language can be a challenging process, there is still a blurry line as to whether English fluency can bias a professor's grading because of writing complexity and accuracy.
- English fluency → low output writing quality
- Research: writing anxiety → fluency, accuracy, complexity
- English fluency → less knowledge → low quality output?
Goal of the research:
- Does writing fluency affect grading?
- If so, what is the extent of the impact?
Gap Analysis: Focus on Minerva
Most research:
- Minority (often immigrants) for non-native learners under a strong dominant culture.
- Adaptation to a new culture combined with discrimination due to race, social, cultural, and socioeconomic differences.
- Diverse assessments can include participation and oral presentations.
- There is no evidence on the extent of the impact.
- There is no consensus due to institutional differences, resulting in no relationships between Turkish students.
